Germany arrests suspect in 25-year-old River Main murder case

LONDON/LYON: German authorities have detained a suspect in a decades-old murder investigation after identifying a teenage girl whose body was found in the River Main nearly 25 years ago.

The victim has been identified as Diana S. The suspect is a 67-year-old German citizen who was born in Pakistan. He is also the victim’s father and has been placed in pre-trial detention on suspicion of murder.

The arrest was made by the Hessian State Criminal Police Office on the initiative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Frankfurt am Main.

Cold case revived after public appeal

The case was among those included in Identify Me, an international campaign coordinated by Interpol in cooperation with six European countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. The initiative seeks to identify 47 women whose bodies were discovered across Europe over recent decades and to support progress in the related investigations.

One of the cases in the campaign, known as The Girl in the River Main, goes back to July 31, 2001, when passers-by found the body of a young girl floating in the River Main in Frankfurt. Investigators later concluded that the victim had been subjected to violent assault and was 16 years old when she died.

For years, the case remained unsolved. A major development came after the Identify Me public appeal was launched in October 2024, asking members of the public to share any information that could help establish the victim’s identity and clarify the circumstances surrounding her death.

Authorities said several public tips helped investigators follow fresh leads, which ultimately led to the suspect’s arrest. The investigation is continuing, and officials said no further details can be released at this stage.

Interpol highlights role of public information

Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza said the identification of the victim and the subsequent arrest showed the value of pursuing unresolved cases over the long term.

This identification, followed by the arrest of a suspect, underscores how important it is to continue investigating unresolved cold cases. As part of the Identify Me campaign, the efforts of the German authorities, supported by information from the public, have helped advance a case that had remained open for a quarter of a century.

He added that the development also demonstrated the importance of combining public participation with sustained investigative efforts and forensic work.

Developments such as this highlight the benefits of combining public engagement with sustained investigative work and forensic capabilities. Interpol will continue to support its member countries in identifying unknown deceased persons and enhancing international cooperation in ongoing investigations.

The case marks a significant step forward in an investigation that had remained unresolved for almost a quarter of a century, with authorities continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
