Alia Bhatt humiliated at Cannes as 'Bollywood pays to attend' debate explodes
Alia Bhatt’s second Cannes Film Festival red carpet appearance sparked memes after videos showed paparazzi seemingly uninterested. Fans debated global visibility and PR culture as trolling escalated online.

Alia Bhatt is going massively viral online — but not for the reason she probably hoped.
The actress made her second appearance at the Cannes Film Festival this week, stepping onto the red carpet in a peach-pink couture gown that many fans initially praised for its soft, elegant aesthetic. But within hours, social media completely shifted focus from the outfit to one painfully awkward red carpet moment.
Videos from Cannes showed Alia smiling, waving, and posing for photographers while a noticeable number of paparazzi appeared uninterested, with several cameras visibly lowered as she walked the carpet. While a few photographers did click her pictures, online users quickly zoomed in on what they described as a “cold” reception from international media.
At one point in the viral clip, Alia seemingly notices the lack of response and turns toward a smaller cluster of mobile phones and cameras to continue posing — a moment that instantly exploded into meme content online.
And the internet did not hold back.
“So embarrassing, man. Cannes is a global movie stage, and this is her 2nd appearance, yet nobody knows her, no pap flashed a single camera at her. Who is she waving at? None looks interested. Serious aura deficit!” one viral comment read.
Another user wrote: “It’s so embarrassing how Indian celebs crave international attention, here’s Alia Bhatt at Cannes, not even a single cameraman bothered to capture her.”
One social media user claiming to have interned at Cannes added fuel to the debate by writing: “Believe me, they don’t even know SRK and these actors. No chance they pay themselves to come here, no one invites TBH.”
Another particularly harsh comment read: “Not a single man took a photo of her. But she’s posing like everyone is watching her. Forget her, they didn’t care about SRK, these Bollywood mfs live in delusion that they are global stars.”
The trolling escalated further after unverified claims began circulating online alleging that Indian paparazzi were later called in following the awkward red carpet moment. Another viral clip allegedly captured a foreign voice from behind asking, “Who is this girl?” though the authenticity and context of the audio remain unclear.
Still, the viral clip has reopened an old internet debate around Bollywood’s global visibility, celebrity PR culture, and whether international events like Cannes truly recognise Indian stars beyond their domestic fame.
For now though, the internet has already decided one thing: Alia’s Cannes appearance may have served couture — but social media served chaos.
