Uninterrupted fertilizer supply to farmers, alternative import routes planned

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to ensure uninterrupted and timely provision of fertilizer to farmers at all costs, ordering continuous monitoring of supply chains to safeguard national food security.

Chairing an important meeting on food security and fertilizer reserves, the prime minister said meeting the agricultural sector’s requirements was among the government’s top priorities to ensure stability and self-sufficiency in food production, according to another PMO statement.

He directed relevant ministries and institutions to develop alternative fertilizer supply arrangements from Central Asian states in view of potential disruptions in supply chains from Gulf countries.

The prime minister also instructed authorities to ensure adequate fertilizer stocks for both Kharif and Rabi crop seasons and emphasized accelerating efforts to expand local fertilizer production through the installation of new manufacturing plants.

He further ordered strict action against hoarding and artificial shortages in the fertilizer market to protect farmers from exploitation and ensure stable prices and availability.

During the briefing, officials informed the meeting that uninterrupted supply of natural gas to fertilizer plants was continuing in line with national requirements to sustain domestic production.

The participants were also told that sufficient fertilizer stocks were currently available for the ongoing Kharif crop season.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahad Khan Cheema and Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar and senior government officials.
