Doctor warns of summer-related skin, stomach ailments

ISLAMABAD: A health specialist has urged the public to take preventive steps during the summer season, warning that rising temperatures can contribute to a range of skin and gastrointestinal problems if proper care is not observed.

Dr Kashif Ahmad Malik, a dermatologist, highlighted the need for greater awareness of seasonal health risks while speaking to a local media outlet on Friday. He said the summer months often bring an increase in skin complaints as well as stomach-related illnesses, with heat, excessive sweating and poor hygiene among the main contributing factors.

According to Dr Malik, many of these conditions can be avoided through simple precautionary measures. He advised people to avoid dark-coloured clothing during hot weather, explaining that such garments absorb more heat and can raise body temperature, causing discomfort.

He also cautioned against eating food items containing artificial colouring, saying these may irritate the digestive system and increase the likelihood of stomach problems, particularly during periods of intense heat.

Hydration and heat protection

Emphasising the importance of staying hydrated, Dr Malik recommended increasing water consumption and using traditional drinks such as lassi during the summer. He said sufficient fluid intake helps the body maintain its temperature, reduces the risk of dehydration and can also limit excessive sweating that may trigger skin irritation and rashes.

The dermatologist further advised people to minimise direct exposure to the sun and avoid prolonged sweating. He said too much time in the heat can lead to sunburn, rashes and other skin conditions.

Dr Malik warned that continuous perspiration may block skin pores, which can in turn cause infections and breakouts. He said preventive care during the hotter months is essential to reducing such risks.

Importance of hygiene

Alongside protection from heat, Dr Malik stressed the role of personal hygiene in preventing summer illnesses. He strongly advised against sharing personal-use items such as towels and combs, saying this can spread bacteria and fungi from one person to another.

He noted that such practices may not only cause fresh infections but can also aggravate existing skin conditions. The specialist said awareness and routine precautions can play an important role in protecting health during the summer season.

He also underscored that avoiding unnecessary heat exposure, maintaining cleanliness and paying attention to diet and hydration can help people reduce the likelihood of seasonal ailments as temperatures rise.
