BANNU: A suspected suicide attack targeting the Fateh Khel police post in Bannu triggered multiple explosions and heavy gunfire on Saturday, leaving casualties feared and causing panic among residents.
According to initial reports, attackers used a vehicle laden with explosives to ram into the police post before opening intense fire from multiple directions.
Sources said at least four powerful explosions were heard across the area, spreading fear and panic among the local population. Nearby civilian neighbourhoods also reportedly suffered severe damage due to the blasts.
While casualties are feared, officials have yet to issue a confirmed toll.
Following the attack, additional police contingents were rushed to the site, while rescue teams launched emergency response operations. Police said Sajjad Khan personally supervised the security operation.
According to police officials, Bannu police personnel were responding with “bravery, courage and professional skill” as security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down the attackers and any possible accomplices.
Authorities also declared an emergency in all three hospitals across the district to deal with potential casualties.
Police checkpoints and snap-checking operations were intensified throughout the city, while security agencies continued closely monitoring the situation. Residents were also reported to have come out in support of law enforcement personnel.
The latest attack comes a day after an explosion caused by the reported crash of a quadcopter drone injured eight people, including women, in a residential area of Bannu.
According to police, the drone entered the area from an unknown direction and exploded shortly after crashing near homes, leaving several civilians wounded.
Bannu has witnessed repeated militant attacks in recent months, with both civilians and security forces frequently targeted amid a broader rise in violence in the region.
Recent incidents in the district have included attacks on police personnel and jirga members, prompting intensified operations by law enforcement agencies to dismantle militant networks operating in the area.
