Yasir Hussain launches relief effort as Karachi heatwave intensifies
Actor and host Yasir Hussain has launched a relief effort in Karachi to distribute cold drinks to labourers working outdoors during the ongoing heatwave. The move comes as the Met Office warns that extreme temperatures are likely to persist into next week.

KARACHI: As Karachi remains in the grip of a severe and prolonged heatwave, actor and host Yasir Hussain has announced a small-scale relief effort aimed at helping people working outdoors in extreme conditions.
In a video posted on social media, Hussain said he would distribute cold drinks through water coolers to labourers and others exposed to the heat during working hours. He highlighted that while the high temperatures are affecting residents across the city, those earning a living in the open are facing much harsher circumstances, often without shade, water or sufficient breaks.
"We cannot reduce the intensity of the sun, but we can help quench someone's thirst," Hussain wrote, presenting the initiative as a simple step that others could also adopt with little effort while offering immediate relief to people in need.
The appeal comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of another heatwave spell, with forecasts indicating that very high temperatures are expected to continue into the coming week. The warning has raised concern for vulnerable communities across Karachi.
Recent weather conditions have added to the urgency. Karachi recorded 44.1°C on Monday, one of the city’s hottest days in nearly seven years, intensifying worries about health and safety.
According to meteorological data, the situation worsened because sea breezes, which usually help moderate Karachi’s coastal weather, nearly stopped. In their place, dry and very hot north-westerly winds from inland areas affected the city.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the extreme weather was being driven by a subtropical high-pressure system near India along with a low-pressure area over Rajasthan and central Sindh, which disrupted normal wind patterns.
Public advisory amid extreme weather
Authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated and recommended drinking two to three litres of water a day. Public advisories have also urged the use of oral rehydration salts to help maintain electrolyte balance during long exposure to heat.
Citizens have been asked to remain indoors where possible and to seek shade when outside. Advisories have also suggested practical cooling steps at home, including placing wet cloth sheets on windows to reduce the effect of hot winds entering houses.
Hussain’s initiative has drawn a positive response on social media, where many users described it as a timely and practical measure. Several people encouraged others to take similar steps to support those most exposed to the weather.
Users also said the effort served as a reminder that small individual actions can provide meaningful help, especially during Karachi’s recurring heat emergencies.
