Chanel does Indian model dirty, makes her debut in jeans at Met Gala

Bhavitha Mandava just made her Met Gala debut as a Chanel ambassador — and somehow the internet’s biggest fashion argument this week is denim. Yes. Denim.

Mandava arrived at fashion’s biggest night wearing what looked, at first glance, like a white tank top, faded blue jeans, and a sheer zip-up. Which immediately caused social media to collectively go: “Wait… THAT’S the Met Gala outfit?”

The reactions were brutal. “Met gala debut in jeans is crazy…..chanel you are going to hell,” one user posted.

Another wrote: “They really sent her to the most photographed event on earth looking like she’s about to pick up her kid from school.”

The look quickly became one of the most debated outfits of the night, with users accusing Chanel of completely fumbling Mandava’s first-ever Met Gala appearance.

“She’s a Chanel ambassador and this is her first met gala!??? Who’s responsible I just wanna talk,” another user posted.

Others were even more dramatic: “They set her up so bad. I’m sorry wdym they sent her to the met gala in a blouse and jeans.”

But here’s the twist. The outfit actually had a deeper meaning — and once people learned the backstory, the internet split into two camps.

According to Chanel, the look was a Haute Couture recreation of the outfit Mandava was wearing when she was first discovered on a subway in New York. The house said the piece took 250 hours to create and was meant as an homage to her beginnings.

Suddenly, fashion people entered the chat. “It’s the Chanel version of the outfit she was wearing on the subway when she got discovered,” one user explained. “It’s an homage to where she came from.”

Another defended her directly: “Y’all are acting like they had a gun to her head forcing her to wear this. She chose to wear this.”

Some even argued the outfit was supposed to feel plain. One user described it as “costumed plainness” — a deliberate contrast in a room full of giant gowns, crystals, feathers, and over-the-top drama.

Others, however, absolutely refused to be convinced. “Right like I don’t care if the ‘jeans’ are made out of recycled dragonfly spit, it’s still a boring outfit,” one post read.

The discourse only got messier when some users began focusing on Mandava herself, saying she looked uncomfortable standing beside more extravagantly dressed celebrities.

“She looks so sad as well,” one user claimed.

Meanwhile, others believed the simplicity was intentional attention-grabbing:
“She is also screaming for attention with that outfit — ‘look I am so simply dressed and you guys are overdoing it.’”

And then came the funniest comparison of all: “Me showing up to work just to show my face for an hour.”

At the end of the day, though, Chanel probably got exactly what it wanted. People cannot stop talking about the outfit. Which, in fashion terms, usually means the outfit already won.
