ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Simly Dam to review its current operations and discuss plans for its expansion, as authorities look to strengthen Islamabad’s long-term water supply.
Officials briefed the minister on the dam’s role in meeting nearly 40% of the capital’s water demand, underlining its importance for the city’s sustainability. During the visit, Naqvi called for a comprehensive and actionable plan to expand the reservoir’s capacity, stressing that such measures are essential to ensure consistent water availability, particularly during dry seasons.
Alongside water management, the minister also assessed the surrounding area and directed officials to prepare a development plan aimed at enhancing recreational and tourism potential around the dam.
Naqvi said the site holds significant promise for leisure activities, including water-based attractions, which could help boost the local economy and create employment opportunities for nearby communities.
He expressed optimism that, with proper planning, the area could attract both domestic and international visitors while offering improved recreational facilities for residents.
Senior officials, including representatives from the Capital Development Authority and Islamabad Police, were present during the visit, signalling institutional backing for the proposed initiatives.
