Karachi raises speed limit on Sharea Faisal for cars, motorcycles

KARACHI: The traffic police have increased the maximum speed limit on Sharea Faisal to 70 kilometres per hour for motor cars, motorcycles and light transport vehicles, according to an official notification that emerged on Saturday.

The revised limit was issued through a notification by DIG Traffic Syed Peer Muhammad Shah. Under the new order, the speed ceiling for light transport vehicles and public service vehicles in the LTV/PSV category, as well as for motor cars and motorcycles, has been raised from 60km/h to 70km/h on the city’s major artery.

The notification states that the previous speed limit for these categories had been 60 kilometres per hour. With the latest revision, motorists driving cars, bikes and light transport vehicles on Sharea Faisal will now be allowed to travel at up to 70 kilometres per hour.

However, the speed restriction for heavy transport vehicles and public service vehicles in the HTV/PSV category has not been changed. According to the notification, that limit will continue to remain 30 kilometres per hour on Sharea Faisal.

The development was disclosed through the traffic police notification attributed to DIG Traffic Syed Peer Muhammad Shah. No other changes to the traffic rules on the road were mentioned in the notification cited in the report.

Revised limits notified

As per the official order, the revised speed limit applies specifically to LTV/PSV vehicles, motor cars and motorcycles using Sharea Faisal. The change marks a 10km/h increase from the earlier cap for those vehicle categories.

At the same time, the notification makes clear that heavy transport vehicles and public service vehicles falling under the HTV/PSV category will continue to be subject to a much lower maximum speed of 30km/h on the same road.

The notification, issued by the DIG Traffic, forms the basis of the revised speed regulation on Sharea Faisal, one of Karachi’s main thoroughfares.
