LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Saturday approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System and granted in-principle approval for 17 to 19 kilometres of the transit line to be constructed underground, directing that the entire city be integrated with the metro network through feeder bus services, according to a DGPR handout.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the chief minister, where a detailed briefing was presented on the scope, design and implementation framework of the project.
To improve traffic flow and urban mobility, it was decided that two tunnel sections will be constructed under the project, while the underground portion of the transit line has been tentatively approved for 17 to 19 kilometres.

It was further decided that solar energy systems will be installed at all stations and depots, aligning the project with green and sustainable transport goals. The mass transit system will have the capacity to facilitate up to 2.6 million passengers in Gujranwala.
Spanning 31.5 kilometres from Gakhar to Aimanabad, the project has been assigned a completion timeline of 12 months. A total of 24 stations will be constructed, including two underground stations.
Depots will be established at Gharjakh, Chand Da Qila and Gondlanwala, while a 62-kilometre-long drainage system will also be developed along both sides of the transit corridor to support urban infrastructure and prevent waterlogging.
A dedicated command and control centre will be set up to manage operations and ensure efficient monitoring of the system.
The chief minister said the Gujranwala Mass Transit System would transform the city’s transport culture and provide a modern, efficient and sustainable commuting facility for residents.
Earlier, on December 5, 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif performed the groundbreaking of the modern mass transit system in Gujranwala.
The Rs62.7 billion Yellow Line Corridor will be completed within one year and will operate entirely on green energy, benefiting at least 51,000 passengers daily.
Under the Punjab CM Transport Vision 2030, the 31-kilometre mass transit system is being developed between Aimanabad and Gakhar Mandi along the GT Road.
At least 25 bus stations, including an underground station, will be constructed along the route, while 36 electric buses will operate on the corridor.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the Gujranwala system would represent a new benchmark in mass transit, comparable with modern urban transport systems already introduced in Lahore.
Separately, it was noted that the event also drew large political participation from surrounding districts including Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Wazirabad and Hafizabad, although reports indicated that a significant number of seats at the venue remained unoccupied due to management issues by local administration.
