Woman detained after infant son’s death in Taxila

TAXILA: A woman was taken into custody for questioning after her four-month-old son died in the jurisdiction of Rango Police Station in Hazro on Tuesday, according to police sources.

Police sources said the child’s father, identified as Mehtab, brought the body of his infant son to the police station and alleged that his wife was responsible for the child’s death.

On the basis of the father’s statement, police detained the infant’s mother and began an inquiry into the circumstances of the incident.

According to the initial findings cited by police, the baby had visible marks of injury on the head, leading investigators to treat the death as suspicious.

The body was shifted for a medical examination to establish the exact cause of death. Police officials said further legal action would be decided in light of the medical report and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

They added that the inquiry was continuing, including into an alleged domestic dispute and related circumstances surrounding the case.

Gambling crackdown in Hazro

In a separate development, Attock police said they arrested eight people during an operation against gambling in the Hazro area.

Police said the raid was conducted by Rango police during routine patrolling after they received information that several individuals were involved in gambling through quail fighting at a volleyball ground in Formuli, within the limits of Hazro police station.

According to police, cash amounting to Rs980,000 was recovered during the operation, along with quails allegedly being used for betting.

The two incidents were reported from the Hazro area in Attock district, where police said investigations and legal proceedings were under way in accordance with the evidence collected in each case.

Officials said the infant death case would proceed after the medical examination report is received, while the gambling case was detected during patrolling and acted upon after information was received about the activity in Formuli.

No further details were provided in the police account beyond the father’s allegation, the visible injury marks noted in the initial findings, and the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the child’s death.
