Washington: US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to its lowest point of his current term, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll that found growing dissatisfaction among Americans over his handling of living costs and the war with Iran.
The four-day survey, completed on Monday, showed that 34% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance in the White House. That marked a decline from 36% in the previous Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was conducted from April 15 to 20.
The poll also indicated that Trump’s public standing has been moving downward since he returned to office in January 2025. At that time, 47% of Americans said they approved of his job performance.
According to the Reuters/Ipsos findings, Americans have become increasingly unhappy with the president’s approach to the cost of living as well as the unpopular war with Iran. The latest figures reflect a continuation of the decline in support seen over the course of his term so far.
Most of the responses in the latest poll were collected before the shooting incident on Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where Trump had been scheduled to speak. The gunman was stopped before entering a hall where the president was dining.
Federal prosecutors have charged the accused shooter with attempting to assassinate the president.
It is not yet clear whether the incident will have any effect on public opinion about Trump, as the bulk of the survey had already been completed before the shooting took place.
Poll tracks continued slide in support
The Reuters/Ipsos poll points to a steady erosion in Trump’s approval rating since the start of his current term. The latest reading of 34% is the lowest recorded in that period, compared with 36% in the prior survey and 47% when he took office in January 2025.
The survey’s findings come amid public concern over economic pressures linked to the cost of living and dissatisfaction with the war with Iran, both of which were cited in the report as factors weighing on the president’s standing.
While the attempted attack at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner added a dramatic development late in the polling period, Reuters/Ipsos said most responses had already been gathered before the event. As a result, any impact from the shooting on Trump’s approval rating remains uncertain.
The latest poll offers a snapshot of public sentiment at a time when Trump’s approval numbers have continued to weaken, with the Reuters/Ipsos data showing a notable drop from the level recorded at the beginning of his term.
