An Indian man in Odisha exhumed his sister’s remains and took them to a bank after staff repeatedly asked him to bring the account holder to withdraw funds, according to local media reports.
The incident took place at a branch of Odisha Grameen Bank in Keonjhar district, where Jeetu Munda had been trying to withdraw INR20,000 from the account of his sister, who died on January 26.
Munda said he had visited the bank multiple times and informed staff that his sister had passed away, but was told to bring her in person. He said he later dug up her grave and brought her remains as proof after becoming frustrated.
Police said the issue arose due to a lack of understanding of banking procedures. Officials said the man was unaware of requirements such as nominee or legal heir documentation for accessing a deceased person’s account.
Authorities said they would assist in facilitating the withdrawal process, while local administration has taken notice of the incident and is reviewing the matter.
