Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi to meet in PSL qualifier for final berth

KARACHI: In-form Peshawar Zalmi will take on a resurgent Islamabad United in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) Qualifier at the National Bank Stadium on Tuesday, with a direct place in the final at stake.

The winner will advance straight to the final, while the losing side will get another opportunity through the Eliminator.

Zalmi enter the contest as the most dominant side of the season, having won eight of their 10 league-stage matches to finish top of the table. Their only defeat came against Lahore Qalandars, while one match against United was washed out earlier in the tournament.

Led by Babar Azam, Zalmi have built a strong and balanced unit, with Kusal Mendis leading the run charts with 500 runs, closely followed by Babar. The side’s top order has been further strengthened by Mohammad Haris, while the middle order features power hitters including Michael Bracewell, Aaron Hardie, Abdul Samad and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Their bowling attack has also delivered consistently, with Sufiyan Muqeem emerging as the leading wicket-taker this season with 19 scalps, alongside pacers Ali Raza and Mohammad Basit.

Despite their strong run, Zalmi’s bowling coach Azhar Mahmood stressed the need for consistency heading into the knockout stage, saying past performances would count for little without execution on match day.

Islamabad United, meanwhile, have shown resilience after a mixed league campaign, bouncing back strongly to secure their Qualifier spot. Under Shadab Khan’s leadership, they registered key wins, including a four-wicket victory over Multan Sultans and an emphatic eight-wicket triumph in their previous outing.

United will rely on a combination of youth and experience, with Sameer Minhas, Mohsin Riaz and Devon Conway expected to lead the batting, supported by Mark Chapman and Shadab Khan in the middle order.

Their bowling attack, featuring Imad Wasim, Salman Irshad and spinner Chris Green, will be tasked with containing Zalmi’s in-form batting lineup.

Green said the team was prepared for the challenge and aimed to restrict Zalmi to a manageable total while taking regular wickets.

Pitch conditions at the National Bank Stadium could play a decisive role. The venue has produced contrasting surfaces this season — one favouring high-scoring encounters and the other assisting bowlers — leaving both teams to adapt quickly on match day.

With Zalmi’s consistency up against United’s ability to recover under pressure, the Qualifier promises a closely contested battle for a place in the final.
