ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday announced the successful launch of its indigenous electro-optical satellite EO-3, marking a major step forward in the country’s growing space programme.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan, the satellite was launched by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in China and described as a “significant milestone” in enhancing national space capabilities.
The EO-3 satellite is designed to strengthen Pakistan’s Earth observation capacity through high-resolution imaging and advanced data systems. In addition to its core imaging mission, it carries experimental payloads aimed at testing next-generation technologies, including a multi-geometry imaging module for improved accuracy, an advanced energy storage system, and an onboard artificial intelligence-powered data processing unit capable of real-time analysis and decision support.
Officials said the addition of EO-3 to Pakistan’s satellite fleet would significantly enhance remote sensing capabilities, improving data continuity, imaging reliability and analytical precision. These advancements are expected to support a wide range of applications, including agriculture, urban planning, disaster management and environmental monitoring.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended Suparco’s scientists and engineers for the achievement, reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing the national space programme. He also acknowledged China’s continued cooperation in space technology, highlighting the deepening partnership between the two countries.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar praised the technical excellence behind the mission, describing the launch as a reflection of Pakistan’s growing scientific capabilities and reiterating the government’s resolve to expand its presence in the space sector.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also congratulated the nation, calling the launch a “major achievement” and noting that Pakistan-China cooperation was reaching new heights in the space domain.
According to China’s state media, the satellite was launched aboard a Long March 6 rocket at 8:15 pm Beijing time and successfully entered its designated orbit.
The EO-3 mission builds on Pakistan’s recent progress in space technology. The country launched its first indigenous electro-optical satellite, EO-1, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in January 2025, followed by EO-2 from the Yangjiang Seashore Launch Centre in February.
The latest launch underscores Pakistan’s steady advancement in satellite technology and its expanding collaboration with China in high-tech sectors, reinforcing its ambitions to leverage space-based solutions for national development.
