WASHINGTON: The USS George H.W. Bush has entered the US Central Command area of responsibility, CENTCOM said on Thursday, taking the number of American carrier strike groups in the region to three.
According to CENTCOM, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is operating in the Indian Ocean. The command announced the development on X and identified the vessel as USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77).
The carrier had left Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia in late March and arrived in the region after sailing around the Cape of Good Hope.
Its arrival adds to an already expanded US naval presence in the wider region. The USS George H.W. Bush has joined the USS Gerald R. Ford, which returned to the Middle East earlier this month after undergoing repairs in Croatia. The Ford moved through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea along with the destroyers USS Mahan and USS Winston S. Churchill.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is also currently operating in the northern Arabian Sea.
With the Bush now in CENTCOM’s area, the United States has three carrier strike groups deployed in or around the region at the same time, marking a major concentration of naval assets.
Regional tensions remain high
The deployment comes during continuing confrontation with Iran and amid ceasefire talks that have stalled.
The United States formally announced a naval blockade on Iranian ports on April 13. Since the start of that blockade, CENTCOM has reported that forces have directed 33 commercial vessels to turn around or head back to Iranian ports.
The latest movement of US naval forces underscores the scale of the American military posture in the region as tensions remain elevated.
The CENTCOM announcement did not provide further operational details beyond confirming the carrier’s presence in the Indian Ocean and its entry into the command’s area of responsibility.
The Bush’s arrival follows a series of recent US naval movements that have placed multiple major warships across the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and northern Arabian Sea. The Ford’s return to the Middle East and the Lincoln’s ongoing operations in the northern Arabian Sea mean the three-carrier deployment now spans several key waterways and maritime zones linked to the broader regional crisis.
CENTCOM’s statement on Thursday focused on the carrier’s arrival and current location, while the wider report linked the deployment to the ongoing conflict with Iran and the lack of progress in ceasefire negotiations.
