PM Shehbaz announces electric bikes for govt employees on easy installments

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that government employees up to BPS-16 will be offered electric bikes on easy instalment plans. He made this announcement while presiding over a high-level meeting focused on promoting electric vehicles (EVs) across the country.

Officials briefed the meeting that the government aims to convert 30% of all vehicles to electric within the next five years, a shift expected to save around $4.5 billion in fuel import costs. The prime minister instructed authorities to speed up existing initiatives designed to expand EV adoption nationwide.

Highlighting the importance of this transition, he noted that moving toward electric vehicles would help cut the import bill, support environmental protection, and strengthen energy security, especially in light of changing regional dynamics and future energy needs.

He also stressed that subsidies for electric motorbikes under the National EV Policy must be distributed transparently and directed officials to accelerate the rollout of the scheme.

During the briefing, it was shared that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four for electric cars. Additionally, 123 applications have been submitted for setting up EV charging stations across the country
