Pakistan reclassified from South Asian to Middle Eastern country, desi internet not having it
Pakistan’s move from South Asia to the new MENAAP administrative region sparks a viral meme wave online. Beyond jokes, the change could affect energy costs, inflation, and Gulf remittances.

Pakistan’s shift into the newly defined Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAAP) administrative region has sparked more than just economic debate — it’s triggered a full-blown meme wave online.
The reclassification, highlighted in a recent World Bank framework, moves Pakistan out of the traditional South Asia grouping and into a bloc shaped more by Middle Eastern and North African economic dynamics. The shift reflects growing ties with Gulf economies, particularly in areas like energy dependence, remittances, and investment flows.
But while the policy reasoning may be strategic, the internet had other priorities.
Within hours of the news circulating, social media timelines filled with reactions ranging from confusion to outright comedy.
“We are not Arabs,” one user wrote bluntly.
Another joked, “Border next to Algeria now,” imagining Pakistan casually relocating across continents overnight.
Then came the more desi-coded humour: “Ab hum bhi kafeel ban gaye?” — a tongue-in-cheek reference to Gulf labour systems, flipping the narrative on its head.
Beyond the jokes, the shift does carry real implications. With tensions around the Strait of Hormuz impacting global oil supply, Pakistan — already heavily reliant on energy imports — could face rising inflation and economic pressure. Remittances from Gulf countries, a key support for the economy, may also be affected if regional instability continues.
At the same time, the World Bank report points to Pakistan’s industrial potential, highlighting examples like Sialkot’s football manufacturing hub as proof that targeted policy and private sector initiative can deliver global success.
Still, online, none of that stood a chance against the memes.
Presenting, the currency reimagined.
Just another day in Pakistan — new headline, new reality, same confusion.
Woke up South Asian, logged in MENAAP — even our shows got an Arab reboot overnight.
Because while economists are busy redrawing regions, the internet is busy asking one question: Since when did Pakistan move west?
