Police arrest alleged 'Arif gang' ringleader in Swabi operation

SWABI: Police in Swabi have arrested the alleged head of a criminal group that investigators say was linked to nearly 20 killings and years of extortion across the district.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Arif, was taken into custody in a covert operation after remaining at large for years. Investigators say the group had built a reputation for violence and intimidation in the area.

District Police Officer (DPO) Swabi Waqas Rafiq told The Express Tribune that the network was highly structured and had deep roots in the local economy. He said police assessments indicated the gang was involved in around 20 confirmed murders, while many other incidents may never have been formally reported because families were allegedly threatened into silence. "Our assessment suggests the gang is involved in around 20 confirmed killings, while there are dozens of other incidents where families never came forward due to threats," he said. "They would kill, then silence the victims' families through intimidation," he said.

Police said the gang allegedly used fear to prevent legal action after killings. According to investigators, members of the group would contact the families of victims after a murder and warn them that their children could be harmed if they registered a first information report.

A senior police officer said this atmosphere of fear enabled the group to continue operating for years without facing effective legal consequences.

DPO Rafiq said the group had also been involved in extortion for nearly a decade, targeting doctors, shopkeepers and businesspeople in the district. Police described the alleged network as one that relied not only on violence but also on sustained intimidation to keep victims and their relatives from approaching law enforcement.

According to the police account, this pattern meant that a number of cases did not enter official records, even where serious crimes had allegedly taken place. Investigators say the arrest of the alleged ringleader is a significant development in efforts to dismantle the network.

The police description of the group portrays it as an organised criminal structure that operated over an extended period in Swabi, using threats after killings and pressure on local communities to avoid scrutiny. Officials say the arrest followed years during which the suspect had evaded capture.

No further operational details about the arrest were provided in the report, but police said the detention of the alleged gang leader marked the dismantling of the network accused of spreading fear in the district.
