MULTAN: A cow was injured in an animal cruelty incident in Punjab’s Muzaffargarh district after unidentified suspects allegedly cut its tongue with a sharp-edged weapon, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the Langar Sarai area of Muzaffargarh, where the animal was grazing when it was attacked, according to police. Officials said unknown persons severed the cow’s tongue during the assault.
A medical report issued by the Punjab Livestock Department stated that half of the cow’s tongue had been cut with a sharp instrument.
Police said a case had been registered at Saddar police station under the Animal Act on the complaint of the animal’s owner. They added that efforts were under way to trace and arrest those involved.
Owner seeks action
The cow’s owner, Umar Hayat, said the animal could no longer eat fodder because of the injuries it had suffered. He also alleged that unidentified persons had earlier harmed his goats and called for strict action against those responsible.
The case adds to a series of reported incidents of cruelty against animals in different parts of the country. Such cases have included acts such as cutting animals’ tongues and breaking their legs.
Police have not identified the suspects so far, but said the investigation is continuing after the registration of the case.
The Punjab Livestock Department’s medical findings form a key part of the case, with the report confirming the nature of the injury and stating that the tongue had been cut by a sharp object.
The incident has drawn attention because of the severity of the injury inflicted on the animal while it was out grazing in the area. Authorities said legal proceedings had been initiated after the owner approached police.
Officials have said they are working to arrest the suspects named as unknown persons in the case. The owner has meanwhile urged authorities to ensure those behind the attack are brought to justice.
