Constable killed chasing smugglers

KARACHI: A police constable was killed after a speeding car struck him when officers tried to stop the vehicle near Maymar Morr on the SITE Superhighway, police said. The vehicle was later chased and two suspects were arrested on allegations of smuggling.

According to police, the suspects, identified as Agha Jan and Naseem, were transporting a large quantity of smuggled Indian gutka, mawa and betel nut, also known as chhalia, from Balochistan to Hyderabad.

SHO SITE Superhighway Sub-Inspector Chaudhry Nawaz said a police mobile was carrying out routine checking at Maymar Morr when officers signalled a suspicious white Corolla, bearing registration number BH-7505, to stop. Instead of complying, the driver allegedly ran over the constable and fled.

The constable who lost his life was identified as 36-year-old Abdul Mannan. Police said he was a resident of Sachal Goth, hailed from the Sakrand area, and was the father of four children.

Police chase and arrests

After the vehicle sped away, police launched a pursuit and tried to intercept it, according to the SHO. During the chase, the suspects allegedly attempted to escape again by ramming the police mobile.

Police later managed to block the car and bring it to a stop. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a large quantity of smuggled gutka, mawa and chhalia, police said.

The two men in the car were taken into custody. Police identified them as Agha Jan and Naseem and said they were allegedly involved in transporting the contraband from Balochistan to Hyderabad.

Funeral and burial arrangements

Police said Abdul Mannan's body was sent to his hometown after funeral prayers. No further details were provided in the report about the funeral arrangements.

The incident took place during what police described as routine checking on the SITE Superhighway. The case centres on the death of the constable after the vehicle did not stop and the subsequent arrest of the two suspects following the chase.

Police said the driver did not stop the car and instead hit the constable before fleeing, prompting the pursuit that ended with the suspects' arrest and the seizure of the smuggled items.
