Alan Ritchson to host Netflix survival competition series

WASHINGTON: Actor Alan Ritchson is set to front a new unscripted survival competition series for Netflix, taking on a project that moves away from scripted action and into a format focused on endurance and survival.

Ritchson, who is widely known for his role in Reacher, will serve as both host and executive producer of the still-untitled series. The show will mark his first time leading a project in those capacities in a format built around physical hardship rather than fictional storytelling.

The series will follow a group of recognisable personalities, including content creators and other public figures, as they are placed in a stripped-down environment where ordinary comforts disappear almost immediately.

Netflix has already established a presence in the survival programming space with titles including Outlast and the licensed series Alone, both of which have drawn steady audiences. Ritchson’s involvement adds a high-profile name to that area of programming.

The project also reflects an earlier phase of Ritchson’s career. Before becoming known for action roles and his work in Reacher, he had appeared briefly on American Idol more than two decades ago.

Production team attached to the series

The series is being produced by Bunim/Murray Productions, a company with extensive experience in reality and competition television. Julie Pizzi and Jay Bienstock are also attached as executive producers, while Bienstock will additionally serve as showrunner.

Despite a busy slate of work, including another season of Reacher and several film projects currently in development, Ritchson is said to be treating the Netflix series as a major commitment rather than a secondary assignment.

Recent attention outside screen work

Earlier, Ritchson also came under public attention following an alleged altercation in his neighbourhood outside Nashville. A video of the incident, first obtained by TMZ, appeared to show him in a physical exchange with a man identified as Ronnie Taylor.

The footage showed a chaotic scene, with two children believed to be the actor’s nearby during the incident. The clip later circulated widely online, drawing broader public attention to the episode.

No title or release date for the Netflix survival series was mentioned in the report, but the project represents a notable shift for Ritchson as he moves from scripted action drama into unscripted competition television.
