Washington: An online leak has pushed the animated film Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender into public focus months before its planned release, after footage, story details and previously unconfirmed casting information surfaced on social media.
More than three minutes of material from the delayed project appeared online over the weekend. A social media user claimed Nickelodeon had accidentally sent them the full movie by email and threatened to livestream the entire film unless Paramount released an official trailer within days.
The clips reportedly stayed online for nearly 12 hours and drew more than 100,000 likes before being removed after copyright complaints. Users later saw a standard message saying the media had been disabled following a report by the rights holder.
Paramount had not issued an official statement on the episode at the time of the report. This left uncertainty over whether the leak resulted from a genuine breach or was part of a marketing effort. The speed with which the material was taken down was widely seen as a sign that the footage was real.
Reaction from fans was mixed. Some welcomed the early look at the film, while others voiced concern that the leak could affect the release campaign, especially after the project was moved from a theatrical launch to a streaming debut.
Footage and cast details emerge
The leaked material reportedly contained two major scenes. In one, Team Avatar reunites to heal an ancient Airbender named Tagah, who, like Aang, had been frozen in ice. Another sequence shows Tagah trying to bring a temple from the Spirit World into the physical world, with alternate versions of familiar characters appearing in the scene.
The footage also appeared to confirm new cast members. Dave Bautista is said to voice Tagah, while Taika Waititi appears as a Spirit World creature called a Gorillavark. A leaked screenshot of the credits also reportedly showed Ke Huy Quan as Avatar Xian and Ken Jeong as the Cabbage Merchant.
Story, cast and release timeline
Set years after the original animated series, the film follows an older Aang and his companions — Katara, Sokka, Toph and Zuko — as they come together for a new worldwide mission. The story centres on the discovery of an ancient power that could stop the extinction of Airbender culture, while also threatening the fragile peace they had fought to secure.
The voice cast includes Eric Nam as Aang, along with Jessica Matten, Dionne Quan, Roman Zaragoza and Steven Yeun, who voices Zuko. The film is directed by Lauren Montgomery and is part of a planned trilogy intended to expand the Avatar universe.
The project was initially scheduled for a theatrical release in October 2025. It was later delayed to January 2026 before being shifted to streaming. It is now due to premiere on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026.
The leak, whether accidental or deliberate, has renewed attention around Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender well ahead of its release.
