‘Ghareeb aadmi achi jagah bardasht nahi ho raha’: Zakir Khan shuts down producer on stage with viral comeback

MUMBAI: Indian stand-up star Zakir Khan delivered one of the standout moments of this year’s awards circuit when a playful jab from producer Goldie Behl was met with a lightning-fast, cutting reply that had the entire audience roaring.

Zakir was co-hosting the ceremony alongside Alia Bhatt when Behl took the stage with his wife, actor Sonali Bendre, to present an award.

Addressing the hosts, Behl quipped, “Alia, I know it’s your first time, fantastic! Zakir, you could do better.”

Zakir didn’t let it slide. “Jinse vyavhar rakhna hai unki tareef kar di, humko train ke neeche phainko. Garib aadmi achi jagah aa gaya bardasht nahi ho raha,” he shot back — loosely calling out the tendency to flatter the powerful while sidelining others, adding that the industry seemingly struggles to accept someone from humble roots making it big.

The sharp retort instantly brought the house down, with the clip quickly making rounds across social media.

Zakir kept the momentum going throughout the night, also poking fun at what he described as performative praise in Bollywood for Dhurandhar: The Revenge, helmed by Aditya Dhar.

“Kitne hi congratulatory post aap daal dein, kitni hi Stories daal dein, kitne hi interview mein aap bol dein my favourite film, magar sach toh yeh hai ki Dhurandhar se sabki jalti toh hai,” he remarked — suggesting that behind all the public praise lies a fair bit of industry envy.

He doubled down with another punchline: “Bomb film mein phootein Lyari mein, par dhuan udaa hai Bandra se Juhu mein,” drawing yet another wave of laughter from the crowd.

Zakir’s rise to fame makes his on-stage confidence all the more striking. Coming from modest beginnings, he started out performing at small open mics in Delhi while juggling odd jobs to sustain himself.

His breakthrough came in 2012 when he won India’s Best Stand Up on Comedy Central, opening doors to larger audiences. Known for his deeply relatable, middle-class storytelling, he soon became a household name — with his catchphrase “Sakht Launda” turning into a youth pop-culture staple.

Since then, Zakir has taken his comedy global, performing at iconic venues like the Royal Albert Hall and Madison Square Garden, where he became the first Indian comic to headline a full-length Hindi show.
