Backlash prompts Sabrina Carpenter apology over Zaghrouta remarks at Coachella

WASHINGTON: Singer Sabrina Carpenter has issued an apology after facing criticism for comments she made during her Coachella performance, where she referred to an Arabic celebratory ululation, known as Zaghrouta, as “weird,” having mistaken it for yodelling.

During her set on Friday night, Carpenter reacted to a sound from the crowd, asking if it was yodelling and joking about it, before questioning the audience member who identified it as part of their cultural expression. She continued the exchange on stage, expressing confusion and making remarks that drew laughter at the moment.

The Zaghrouta is a traditional celebratory vocal expression widely used across Arab cultures during joyful occasions such as weddings and gatherings.

Following significant online backlash, with users calling her comments insensitive and dismissive of cultural practices, Carpenter addressed the controversy on X. She said her reaction came from confusion and was not intended to offend, adding that she could have handled the moment better.

She also stated that she now understands what Zaghrouta is and expressed openness toward all forms of celebration and audience participation in her performances.

Carpenter was among the headliners at this year’s Coachella festival, alongside artists such as Justin Bieber and Karol G.
