Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday underscored the continuing importance of the Constitution adopted on April 10, 1973, calling it the country’s principal legal and political framework.
In a message issued on Constitution Day, the president said the 1973 Constitution marked a defining moment in Pakistan’s constitutional history. He noted that it was the first time a directly elected parliament had put in place a constitutional arrangement based on consensus after more than 25 years of uncertainty.
Zardari said the document has retained its relevance over the decades and has continued to serve as the foundation of the state’s legal and political order. His remarks came as the country observed Constitution Day, commemorating the adoption of the 1973 Constitution.
Message on Constitution Day
According to the president’s message, the Constitution has played a stabilising role despite the difficulties Pakistan has encountered over the past five decades. He said that while the country had gone through a range of challenges, the Constitution remained a source of continuity and institutional recovery.
The president’s statement highlighted the significance of the constitutional framework in shaping the state’s governance structure and political system. He described the 1973 Constitution as an enduring national document that has continued to guide the country through different periods.
Zardari’s message focused on the historical importance of the Constitution’s adoption by a directly elected parliament and the consensus that underpinned it. He said this feature distinguished it in Pakistan’s constitutional development after a prolonged period of uncertainty. "The 1973 Constitution represented the first instance in which a directly elected parliament established a consensual constitutional order after more than 25 years of uncertainty," he said.
Reflecting on the country’s journey since its adoption, the president said Pakistan had faced multiple challenges over the last 50 years. Even so, he said, the Constitution had continued to provide continuity and helped institutions recover during difficult periods.
The president’s Constitution Day message reaffirmed the place of the 1973 Constitution at the centre of Pakistan’s state structure, presenting it as a lasting framework for the country’s legal and political life.
