NDMA issues landslide alert for parts of AJK amid heavy rain

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a landslide warning for several areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as heavy rainfall continues to affect the region.

The alert said there could be disruptions in vulnerable mountainous areas, despite indications that the current weather system is beginning to lose strength.

According to officials, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Haveli and Poonch remain exposed to possible landslide activity because of waterlogged ground and unstable hillsides.

The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has also identified Athmuqam, Dhudial and Leepa as high-risk locations. Officials warned that falling debris in these areas could pose a threat to both residents and people travelling through the region.

Areas flagged as vulnerable

The NDMA alert focuses on mountainous parts of AJK where continued rainfall has increased the risk of slope failure. Officials said saturated soil and weakened terrain have raised the possibility of landslides in multiple districts.

Among the areas specifically named in the warning are Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Haveli and Poonch. The NEOC separately highlighted Athmuqam, Dhudial and Leepa as places facing a higher level of risk during the ongoing wet spell.

The authority cautioned that debris falling from unstable slopes could affect local populations as well as commuters using roads in these regions.

Weather system still poses risks

While the prevailing weather system is said to be weakening, the NDMA warning indicates that the danger has not passed in areas already affected by persistent rain.

Officials said the combination of heavy precipitation, soaked ground and unstable slopes continues to create hazardous conditions in susceptible mountainous zones of AJK.

The alert comes as authorities monitor the impact of the current spell of rain on terrain considered vulnerable to landslides and related disruptions.

The NDMA warning specifically underscores the need for caution in high-risk areas where slope instability and falling debris may endanger daily movement and local communities.
