Hania Aamir calls out online bullying of women for being happy

ISLAMABAD: Actor Hania Aamir has criticised online bullying directed at women, saying many people appear unwilling to let women live freely or express happiness without being targeted.

In an Instagram story shared on Monday, Aamir addressed the criticism she and other women often face on social media. Referring to the pattern of hostile reactions, she wrote, "People just hate happy women. They hate women who laugh loud, live fully, dress how they want, speak their minds, and take up space without apologising."

She said the issue was not limited to one person and described it as a broader social attitude toward women who appear confident or content. According to her, women are often judged for being visible, joyful or self-assured.

Aamir said women are expected to remain quiet, modest and grateful, and are criticised when they do not fit those expectations. She added that if a woman is happy, independent or simply enjoying her life, people begin to question her character, morals and worth.

Continuing her remarks, the actor said this behaviour reflects discomfort with women who are not seeking approval. She wrote, Because a happy woman is hard to control. She doesn’t need validation from the world that benefits from her silence.

She also urged women not to shrink themselves to make others comfortable. In her message, Aamir said women should not dim their light just because it threatens people who have only ever known how to survive in darkness.

The actor’s comments came in response to online criticism over her recent public appearances and social media presence. Her statement drew attention for directly addressing the tone of commentary often aimed at women in the entertainment industry and beyond.

Aamir has a large following on social media and frequently shares personal and professional updates with fans. Her latest remarks added to ongoing conversations online about harassment, gendered criticism and the policing of women’s behaviour in public spaces.

Message against gendered criticism

In her post, Aamir framed the issue as one rooted in control rather than concern. She suggested that women who are expressive, visible and self-directed are often treated as a problem simply because they do not conform to restrictive expectations.

Her statement resonated with wider discussions around how women are judged online, particularly when they are seen as too outspoken, too confident or too happy. By speaking publicly, Aamir joined a growing number of public figures using their platforms to push back against misogynistic commentary on social media.

Her post concluded with a message encouraging women to remain true to themselves despite criticism and hostility online.
