BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing relationship with North Korea, vowing to build on positive momentum in bilateral ties during talks in Pyongyang.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui as part of his two-day official visit from April 9 to 10.
Highlighting the importance of leadership-level engagement, Wang said the strategic guidance of the two countries’ top leadership remained the “strongest guarantee” for the continued development of China-DPRK relations. He stressed that Beijing was ready to enhance strategic communication, deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, and expand exchanges to deliver tangible benefits to both nations.
Marking the 65th anniversary of the signing of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, Wang underscored the enduring nature of ties between the two neighbours. He noted that despite shifting regional and global dynamics, both countries have consistently upheld mutual trust and support as “good neighbours, friends and comrades”.
He added that China stands ready to host commemorative events for the anniversary, while also promoting high-level exchanges, cultural ties, and practical cooperation aimed at advancing economic and social development in both countries.
For her part, Choe Son Hui described the relationship as “profound, solid and sustainable,” rooted in shared political values and a long history of cooperation. She reaffirmed Pyongyang’s firm support for the one-China principle and expressed opposition to any external interference in China’s internal affairs, including issues related to Taiwan, Xizang and Xinjiang.
Choe also endorsed China’s vision of a “community with a shared future for humanity” and praised Beijing’s role in global and regional affairs. She said North Korea was ready to work closely with China to mark the treaty anniversary, expand practical cooperation, and strengthen coordination on diplomatic and multilateral platforms.
Both sides also exchanged views on current international and regional developments, signalling continued alignment on key geopolitical issues as they seek to further elevate bilateral relations.
