Rain in Lahore lowers temperatures but causes outages and traffic disruption

LAHORE: Intermittent rain in different parts of Lahore on Tuesday brought cooler weather to the city, but also led to water accumulation, electricity disruptions and traffic problems in several areas.

Showers were reported from Mughalpura, Dharampura, Johar Town, Iqbal Town, Sabzazar, Model Town, Garden Town, Township and Green Town. Rain was also recorded along major roads and surrounding areas, including Jail Road, Canal Road, Mall Road and Ferozepur Road.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the city’s maximum temperature fell to 24 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 16 degrees Celsius. Humidity remained around 40 per cent, and winds of about 13 kilometres per hour contributed to the cooler conditions.

Residents welcomed the change in weather as a break from the recent rise in temperatures. However, the rainfall also highlighted continuing civic management issues, with low-lying localities facing waterlogging and commuters encountering delays.

Several parts of Lahore saw rainwater collect on roads, slowing the flow of traffic and making travel more difficult, especially during busy hours. Motorists also reported dangerous driving conditions because potholes were submerged and visibility dropped during heavier spells of rain.

Power supply affected in multiple areas

The rain also affected the electricity network, with more than 100 feeders tripping during the storm. The outages disrupted power supply in a number of neighbourhoods.

Officials said the interruptions were caused by technical faults and sudden load fluctuations in the transmission system. Restoration work remained under way, although the continuing rain created difficulties for repair efforts.

Administration puts services on alert

In response to the situation, the district administration placed emergency services on high alert. Teams of the Water and Sanitation Agency, along with other municipal departments, were deployed with machinery to drain accumulated rainwater from affected areas.

Authorities also directed assistant commissioners to supervise operations in their respective areas in an effort to reduce inconvenience for residents.

Citizens were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to remain careful near electricity poles and exposed wiring during wet weather to reduce the risk of accidents.

The rainfall brought temporary relief from the heat, but at the same time underscored the strain that wet weather can place on Lahore’s civic infrastructure and essential services.
