KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Muhammad Ali Malkani has announced the start of a province-wide vaccination drive aimed at protecting livestock from disease ahead of the monsoon season.
He made the announcement while speaking at the inauguration of the Pre-Monsoon Vaccination Programme 2026-27 at the Government Veterinary Hospital in Landhi Cattle Colony, which he described as one of the largest cattle markets in Asia.
During his address, the minister underscored the importance of preventive measures in animal health, saying the campaign was being launched on the principle that 'prevention is better than cure'.
Malkani said Karachi has the distinction of being home to one of the world’s major livestock hubs, highlighting the city’s importance in the sector.
He also told traders and farmers that the provincial government was fully aware of the difficulties they were facing. According to the minister, the government would soon bring together all stakeholders to work out sustainable solutions to those issues.
Focus on animal health and economy
Referring to the livestock sector in Punjab, Malkani said the province has a larger population, greater land area, a bigger livestock base and a higher budget. Despite that, he said, the Sindh government remained determined to deliver strong results even with limited resources.
The minister said the vaccination initiative was not merely a budget-related exercise but part of a wider effort to protect animal health and support the economy.
The campaign has been launched as a pre-monsoon measure, with the government seeking to reduce the risk of disease among animals through preventive vaccination.
The inauguration ceremony took place at the Government Veterinary Hospital in Landhi Cattle Colony, a key livestock centre in Karachi. The minister used the occasion to reiterate the government’s commitment to the sector and to reassure livestock traders and farmers that their concerns were being taken into account.
Malkani said the broader objective of the programme was to safeguard livestock and reinforce the economic contribution of the sector. He said the Sindh government intended to pursue meaningful outcomes despite resource constraints.
The province-wide campaign marks the formal beginning of the Pre-Monsoon Vaccination Programme 2026-27 in Sindh, with officials presenting it as an effort to improve animal health protection across the province.
