ISLAMABAD: The government has told its coalition partners that petroleum prices would be brought down once the current situation returns to normal, indicating possible relief for consumers after recent increases in fuel costs.
The assurance was given during a joint parliamentary party meeting of the ruling alliance at Parliament House, chaired by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. According to officials, coalition leaders were briefed on the latest petroleum price adjustments and informed that the increase had been caused by extraordinary circumstances.
Ministers told participants that relief would be passed on as soon as conditions improved. The meeting took place amid rising fuel prices and broader economic pressure on consumers.
Leaders from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Pakistan Peoples Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement and other allied parties attended the session. Among those present were Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, along with senior lawmakers.
Ministers brief coalition leaders
During the meeting, the finance and petroleum ministers gave parliamentary leaders an update on the current situation. They outlined steps taken to ensure uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and to manage the effects of external pressures on the domestic market.
The discussion also covered contingency planning and coordination among coalition partners in response to changing economic conditions. Participants stressed the need for political unity in dealing with economic challenges and backed measures aimed at stabilising prices and maintaining supply chains.
Government says partners backed its approach
In a statement issued after the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said coalition partners had expressed confidence in the federal government’s policies and supported its handling of the situation.
He said additional measures linked to petroleum pricing also came under discussion, and ministers reaffirmed their commitment to reducing the burden on consumers at the earliest possible stage.
Officials maintained that once the situation normalises, the government would move to lower petroleum prices. The message conveyed at the meeting suggested that a rollback in fuel costs could follow if external pressures ease.
The meeting also placed emphasis on preserving stability and public confidence as the government navigates the impact of developments affecting fuel pricing and the wider economy.
