Mount Everest guides allegedly 'poisoning' trekkers for insurance money

Nepal’s picturesque mountains are famous for adventure, stunning views, and the legendary sherpas—but a massive insurance scam has put a giant shadow over the country’s trekking scene. Authorities in Kathmandu have charged 32 people in connection with a multi-million-dollar racket involving fake helicopter rescues of unsuspecting trekkers.

According to police, the scam involved guides and tour agencies intentionally making foreign tourists appear sick or in distress so that helicopter rescues could be called—and insurance companies billed. The scam, running for years, has reportedly pocketed millions while shaking trust in one of Nepal’s most vital industries.

Local tourism operators are reeling from the news. Tamang Sherpa, who runs Sherpa Private Limited in Kathmandu, told reporters, “When I heard this news a few days ago, this shocked me. For generations, we built a reputation in the field of tourism and a few people are destroying it.”

Tourists and climbers are now second-guessing their trips. Many have canceled bookings, and sherpas and trekking guides face heightened scrutiny from both travelers and authorities. Social media has erupted with jokes, memes, and incredulous comments about trekkers being “rescued for profit,” turning the scandal into a bizarre mix of outrage and viral entertainment.

While the courts now handle the 32 accused, the story serves as a cautionary tale: in Nepal, even adventure tourism can come with unexpected plot twists. For trekkers, the mountains may be scenic, but apparently, the scams are just as high up.
