FIA arrests Nadra official over fake CNICs issued to Afghan nationals in Karachi

KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday arrested a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) official for his alleged role in issuing fake identity cards to Afghan nationals in Karachi.

According to an FIA spokesperson, the agency conducted a raid in the Metroville SITE area, where two Afghan nationals were apprehended with illegal Pakistani identity documents. Further investigation revealed that NADRA official Furqan Ahmed Khan Durrani had allegedly approved the Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) for the two individuals.

Durrani was taken into custody in a subsequent operation in the Nursery area of Karachi. The FIA said legal action is being pursued under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. The agency has secured a three-day physical remand of the suspects as investigations continue, though it was not immediately clear whether the remand included the NADRA official.

The development follows the government’s Illegal Foreigners’ Repatriation Plan (IFRP), launched in September 2023, under which more than 1.82 million Afghan nationals have returned to Afghanistan.

Earlier in 2024, NADRA, working with the FIA, uncovered a network involved in issuing CNICs to foreigners without authorisation. An internal review identified five NADRA employees who had taken part in the illicit scheme.
