Ali Zafar vs Meesha Shafi: Verdict expected today in high-profile Rs1bn defamation case

LAHORE: The Lahore Sessions Court is expected to announce its verdict today in the high-profile Rs1 billion defamation case filed by singer-actor Ali Zafar against fellow singer Meesha Shafi, who had accused him of sexual harassment.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Asif Hayat oversaw Monday’s proceedings, during which both parties’ legal teams concluded their arguments. The judge remarked that a thorough review of the case record was necessary before delivering a judgment. He added that if the verdict is finalized within court hours today, it may be announced immediately; otherwise, a new date for the pronouncement will be set.

Last week, the legal representatives for both sides wrapped up their arguments. Advocate Umar Tariq Gill, representing Ali Zafar, asserted that Meesha Shafi had made false allegations that severely damaged Zafar’s reputation.

He emphasized that no other individual had ever accused Ali of such misconduct and requested the court to grant the defamation suit, ordering Meesha to pay Rs1 billion in damages.

On the other side, Advocate Saqib Jilani, representing Meesha Shafi, urged the court to dismiss the defamation claim and award costs in her favor. He argued that the plaintiff had failed to provide any solid evidence supporting the defamation allegations.

Jilani further highlighted that Meesha had consistently reported multiple incidents of alleged harassment and remained steadfast in her statements despite extensive cross-examination by Ali Zafar’s lawyers. He concluded that Meesha could not be penalized for speaking out about her experiences through a defamation suit filed against her.

Ali Zafar initially filed the defamation case in 2018, claiming that Meesha’s allegations had harmed his public image and caused emotional distress to his family. The plaintiff has sought Rs1 billion in damages and a formal decree against Meesha Shafi.
