PM Shehbaz rejects summary to increase petrol and diesel prices ahead of Eid

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Friday that he had rejected a summary proposing an increase in petrol and high-speed diesel prices, stating that the rates would remain unchanged for the coming week.

The premier made the announcement during a nationally televised address delivered on the eve of Eidul Fitr.

PM extends Eid greetings, calls for national unity

Prime Minister Shehbaz began his address by extending Eid greetings to the nation. He said that in view of the present situation, the festival demanded humanity, national unity and collective responsibility.

"And I believe the joy of Eid in its true sense is sharing it with those in need," he added.

The prime minister said the world was facing an "extraordinary challenge" today, adding that the values of selflessness, hard work and compassion were the only means to resolving the crisis.

Relief for consumers amid global fuel crisis

The decision to keep petroleum prices unchanged comes amid what has been described as a global fuel crisis. By rejecting the summary for a price hike, the premier has effectively shielded consumers from an additional financial burden during the Eid festivities.

The announcement is expected to provide significant relief to citizens across the country, particularly at a time when millions are travelling to celebrate the festival with their families.

Petroleum prices in Pakistan are revised on a fortnightly basis, with the government receiving summaries from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) recommending adjustments based on international oil prices and exchange rate fluctuations. The prime minister's rejection of the latest summary means that the existing rates for petrol and high-speed diesel will continue to apply for the next fortnight.

This was a developing story at the time of reporting, with further details expected to follow.
