Govt of Punjab extends Eid holidays at last minute, creates confusion across sectors
  • Notification unclear on scope as schools shut, banks remain open, private offices divided

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Wednesday announced an extension in Eid holidays at the eleventh hour, creating confusion across public and private sectors as the federal government maintained holidays only for Friday and Saturday.

Earlier, Punjab had aligned its schedule with the federal government, but the late notification altered the position without clearly defining its applicability to all institutions.

The notification did not specify whether the extended holidays would apply to both public and private offices, leading to varying interpretations across sectors. Government offices and educational institutions have largely closed, while private businesses remain divided, with some continuing operations.

Schools across the province have observed the extended break, following directives from provincial authorities. However, the lack of clarity has left many private offices uncertain about compliance.

Banks have remained open, as they follow the State Bank of Pakistan and federal government holiday schedule, which has not changed.

The situation has resulted in operational inconsistencies, with different sectors observing different holiday timelines, affecting routine business activity and public access to services.

The abrupt announcement and absence of detailed instructions have contributed to confusion, particularly among private employers and employees regarding attendance and closures.
