GILGIT: Security forces successfully thwarted an attack on a check post near the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Colony in the Thore area of Diamer district early Monday morning, according to police officials.

Police reported that unidentified terrorists opened fire on the security forces' check post, which is located close to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam construction site, at approximately 4am. Security personnel stationed at the post responded immediately, leading to an exchange of gunfire that lasted about thirty minutes.

Diamer Deputy Commissioner Attaur Rehman Kakar told Dawn that there were no casualties or injuries reported among the security forces during the incident. He stated, "The assailants fled the scene after retaliatory fire." Mr Kakar further confirmed that the attackers had targeted the security forces, but their efforts were repulsed due to the prompt response by those on duty.

According to Mr Kakar, a group of terrorists is believed to have been involved in the assault. He added that an investigation into the incident is currently underway to identify those responsible and determine their motives.

The check post is situated near the Wapda Colony, in close proximity to the strategic Diamer-Bhasha Dam project, which has previously been considered a sensitive location. Security in the area remains on high alert as authorities continue their probe into the attempted attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident as of yet. Officials have not released further details regarding the number of attackers or any potential leads in the ongoing investigation.
