Police foil twin militant attacks on check posts in Bannu, Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Police repelled a late-night terrorist assault on the Fatah Khel check post in Bannu early Monday after militants attempted to target the facility under the cover of darkness, officials confirmed.

According to police, the attack was successfully thwarted due to the alertness and swift response of personnel stationed at the check post.

Officials said that around 2:00am, thermal cameras detected suspicious movement of more than 15 militants around the Fatah Khel check post. The suspects were reportedly attempting to take positions in a forested area in front of the post.

Police personnel, already on high alert, opened fire immediately after spotting the movement, forcing the attackers to retreat into the darkness before they could carry out their plan.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police for the region praised the officers involved in the operation, saying their vigilance and effective use of modern surveillance technology had helped foil the attempted attack.

“They have proven they are ready to deal with any emergency situation at all times,” the official said, announcing commendation certificates and cash rewards for the police team.

Authorities added that a search operation was underway in the surrounding area to track down the fleeing militants.

In a separate incident, police in Peshawar also foiled another attempted militant attack on the Sakhi Pul check post.

According to the Warsak Superintendent of Police, militants tried to target the post from the direction of the tribal district of Khyber District. However, alert personnel responded promptly, forcing the attackers to retreat.

Officials said the timely response by security forces in both incidents prevented potential casualties and damage to security installations.
