Police thwart terrorist attack attempt in KP’s Bannu

ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police successfully thwarted a terrorist attack in the Nurar area of Bannu district late Sunday night, according to police officials.

The incident comes amid a series of attacks in the province targeting security forces and law enforcement agencies in recent months.

Bannu District Police Officer (DPO) Saleem Abbas Kulachi confirmed the foiled attack, stating that a group of terrorists was attempting to plant an improvised explosive device (IED) in the area. He said the police, acting on timely intelligence, swiftly surrounded the area with support from security forces.

According to initial reports, the terrorists were killed while attempting to plant the IED. The police official further assured the public that Bannu police were fully prepared and ready to handle any security threats in the region.

The thwarted attack highlights the continuing security challenges faced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly Bannu, which has been a hotspot for terrorist activities targeting police personnel. In recent weeks, attacks on law enforcement officers have been escalating in various areas of KP, including Bannu, Karak, Lakki Marwat, and Bajaur.

The recent surge in terrorism has been linked to the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which broke its ceasefire with the government in 2022. In response, Pakistan has ramped up counterterrorism operations, with multiple incidents occurring just last week.

These include a police official being martyred in Karak, a thwarted terrorist assault on a police station in Basyakhel, Bannu, and a deadly attack on a Frontier Corps vehicle in Daryoba, Bannu, which left one soldier dead and two others injured.

Despite these challenges, DPO Kulachi reassured the public of the police’s readiness to confront any security threats, affirming that resources were being utilized to ensure the safety of the citizens and maintain order in the region.
