English clubs face uphill battle after Champions League setbacks

MANCHESTER: England's six representatives in the Champions League have encountered significant challenges in the first legs of the tournament's last 16, with none able to secure a victory. Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur each face daunting tasks in their upcoming home fixtures, as they trail by three goals against Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico Madrid, respectively.

Liverpool and Arsenal, meanwhile, remain hopeful of progressing further in the competition. Liverpool are set to face Galatasaray, while Arsenal will take on Bayer Leverkusen, with both clubs expected to advance. Newcastle United, having delivered a strong performance in a 1-1 draw against Barcelona at St. James’ Park, are aiming to pull off an upset at Camp Nou.

Despite the Premier League's considerable financial power, largely attributed to lucrative television rights deals, this advantage has not translated into consistent success in the latter stages of the Champions League in recent years. Over the past 13 seasons, only three English clubs have managed to win the prestigious European title.

Arsenal were the sole Premier League side to reach the last stage of the competition in the previous season, highlighting the ongoing struggle of English teams to convert their domestic dominance into European triumphs.
