WELLINGTON: South Africa secured a convincing seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Twenty20 International at Bay Oval on Sunday, taking an early lead in the five-match series.
The South African seamers dominated the opening stages of the match, reducing New Zealand—recent finalists in the World Cup—to 36 for 5. The hosts were eventually bowled out for just 91 runs in the 15th over, marking their 10th lowest total in T20 internationals.
South Africa chased down the target with ease, reaching 93 for 3 with 20 balls remaining. Opener Connor Esterhuizen anchored the innings with an unbeaten 45 off 48 deliveries, guiding his team to victory. Esterhuizen was one of four South African players making their international debut in any format, alongside Rubin Hermann, Dian Forrester, and Nqobani Mokoena.
Teenage pace bowler Nqobani Mokoena made a notable impact on debut, exploiting the unpredictable bounce at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval to claim 3 wickets for 26 runs in 3.3 overs. His efforts played a key role in dismantling the New Zealand batting lineup.
The result gives South Africa an early advantage in the series, with both teams set to face off in four more matches. The visitors’ strong bowling performance and the contributions from debutants highlighted the depth and potential of the new-look South African side.
