ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of the Pakistan Development Party (PDP), Nawabzada Iftikhar Ahmed Khan Babar, has emphasised the urgent need for Pakistan to shift its focus towards domestic oil and gas production in order to secure the country's energy future.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Babar highlighted the country's heavy reliance on imported energy resources, which he said poses significant risks to national energy security. He stated, "Pakistan must reduce its dependence on imported oil and gas by tapping into its own reserves."
Babar pointed out that Pakistan possesses substantial untapped reserves of oil and gas, and called on the government to take concrete steps to exploit these resources. He argued that harnessing domestic energy sources would not only reduce the burden on foreign exchange reserves but also help stabilise the economy and create employment opportunities.
The PDP chief also criticised what he described as a lack of long-term planning in the energy sector. He urged policymakers to develop a comprehensive strategy focused on self-reliance and sustainability. According to Babar, prioritising indigenous oil and gas exploration is essential for achieving energy independence and shielding the country from global market fluctuations.
Babar further stressed the importance of investing in modern technology and infrastructure to support local exploration and production activities. He said that a coordinated approach involving both public and private sector stakeholders is necessary to unlock the full potential of Pakistan’s energy resources.
In his remarks, Babar reiterated the PDP's commitment to advocating for policies that promote energy security and economic growth. He called for immediate action, stating, "The time has come for Pakistan to take decisive steps towards energy self-sufficiency."
The press conference concluded with Babar urging the government and relevant authorities to prioritise domestic oil and gas development as a cornerstone of national policy.
