Punjab mandates installation of PSCA-linked panic buttons in all schools

LAHORE: The Punjab government has instructed all public and private schools across the province to install 'panic buttons' connected to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) Public Safety App, aiming to ensure swift emergency response in educational institutions.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department, all schools—both public and private—are required to achieve 100 percent installation and operational readiness of these panic buttons. The directive follows a high-level meeting at the provincial home department on March 3, during which officials proposed the installation of panic buttons in all schools to enable timely action during emergencies.

The notification, as reported, specifies that chief executive officers (CEOs) of district education authorities (DEAs) have been tasked with ensuring that all school heads implement the new security system without delay. The panic buttons are integrated with the PSCA’s Public Safety App, which is designed to facilitate rapid communication with law enforcement and emergency responders.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the security framework of educational institutions in Punjab. The government’s move comes amid growing concerns about the safety of students and staff, and aims to provide an immediate channel for schools to alert authorities in case of any threat or emergency situation.

The PSCA’s Public Safety App, to which the panic buttons will be linked, is an existing platform used to coordinate emergency responses across the province. By mandating the installation of these devices, the Punjab government seeks to enhance the capacity of schools to respond effectively to potential security incidents.

All district education authorities have been directed to oversee the immediate implementation of this system, ensuring that every school is equipped with the necessary technology to safeguard students and staff.
