Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on high alert as mpox cases rise to 26

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Health Department has placed the province on high alert following a surge in mpox cases, which have now reached a total of 26, according to an official statement.

Health authorities have directed all hospitals across the province to remain vigilant and to closely monitor for suspected cases of mpox. The department has also instructed medical staff to strictly adhere to infection prevention protocols in order to curb the spread of the disease.

The Health Department noted that recent cases indicate signs of local transmission originating from Punjab. In response, officials have emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance and prompt reporting of any new or suspected mpox cases.

According to the department, hospitals have been asked to ensure the availability of isolation facilities for patients and to provide necessary protective equipment to healthcare workers. The department has also called for increased public awareness regarding the symptoms and preventive measures for mpox.

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that can spread through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials. Symptoms typically include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.

The Health Department has urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with mpox and to follow recommended health guidelines to prevent further transmission.
