WASHINGTON: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday adopted a resolution led by Bahrain, condemning Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf countries. The resolution, drafted on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), specifically denounced the attacks on US assets and military bases in the region.
According to the resolution, Iran’s strikes were carried out in retaliation for American and Israeli attacks on Iran, which began on February 28. These strikes also resulted in the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was serving as Iran’s supreme leader at the time.
The Bahrain-led resolution set a new record at the UNSC, with 135 co-sponsors, surpassing the previous high of 134 for Resolution 2177 (2014) on Ebola. Pakistan was among the co-sponsors and voted in favour of the resolution. In its statement, Pakistan noted that it is “not immune from these attacks” and expressed its support for the resolution.
The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favour, while China and Russia abstained. The text “condemns in the strongest terms the egregious attacks” carried out by Iran against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other Gulf countries.
The adoption of this resolution highlights growing international concern over escalating tensions in the Gulf region and underscores the broad support among UN member states for measures aimed at preventing further hostilities.
