Three Norwegian brothers of Iraqi origin arrested over US embassy blast in Oslo

OSLO: Norwegian authorities have detained three brothers, all Norwegian citizens of Iraqi descent, in connection with a recent explosion outside the United States embassy in Oslo. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, resulted in minor damage to the embassy but caused no injuries.

Police prosecutor Christian Hatlo announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the arrests took place in Oslo at approximately 3:30pm local time (2:30pm GMT). The suspects, who are in their 20s, were not previously known to law enforcement.

Hatlo stated that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are examining several possible motives. "We are still working from several hypotheses. One of them is whether this is an order from a government entity," Hatlo said. He added, "This is quite natural given the target — the US embassy — and the security situation the world is in today."

According to Hatlo, investigators are working to determine the specific roles each brother played in the incident. "We believe that one of them is the person who placed the bomb outside the embassy and that the other two were complicit in the act," he told reporters.

The police have not yet disclosed further details regarding the nature of the explosive device or the broader context of the suspects' alleged involvement. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, with authorities considering various possibilities, including potential links to foreign entities.
