FWO to offer free anti-theft M-tag chips for motorcycles in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) is in the process of developing a new M-tag chip designed specifically for motorcycles, which will be distributed free of charge to motorists in Islamabad, according to Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon.

Speaking to the media at Parliament, Deputy Commissioner Memon stated that the development of the new chip is ongoing. Once completed, it will be provided at no cost to motorcycle owners. The initiative aims to enhance security and prevent theft of motorcycles in the city.

According to FWO, the M-tag is designed with security features that render it ineffective if removed from the motorcycle, eliminating the risk of the same tag being used on another bike. In the event of theft, owners can report the incident using the designated helpline number, allowing for immediate blocking of the M-tag. If a tag is stolen, a replacement will be installed free of charge.

Several security and safety features have been incorporated into the new M-tag system, although specific details were not disclosed. The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve vehicle tracking and security in Islamabad.

The online registration process for taxis is also underway in the city, with more than 19,000 taxis and motorcycles registered so far. As part of the new regulations, drivers are now required to record the identities of riders, as well as pickup and drop-off locations. Deputy Commissioner Memon noted that in foreign countries, taxis operate only with a licence, and Islamabad is moving towards a similar system by making taxi registration mandatory.

The FWO's introduction of the anti-theft M-tag chip is expected to strengthen vehicle security and support law enforcement efforts in Islamabad.
