ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has cautioned the UN Security Council about the serious threat posed to the region by terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
Addressing a Security Council meeting on February 12, 2026, Ambassador Ahmad highlighted that elements within the Taliban have "chosen the path of complicity" with terrorist groups such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and Daesh. He stated that this collaboration has resulted in a significant escalation of security challenges for Pakistan and the broader region.
Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that the presence and activities of these groups in Afghanistan threaten not only Pakistan but also regional stability. He called upon the international community to take note of the situation and to support efforts aimed at countering terrorism in the region.
He further noted that the continued existence of safe havens for terrorist organizations in Afghanistan has enabled them to plan and execute attacks across borders. According to Ambassador Ahmad, this situation requires urgent and coordinated action by all stakeholders to prevent further destabilization.
During his address, the ambassador reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism and underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing the issue. He also urged the Taliban authorities to fulfill their obligations to prevent Afghan territory from being used for terrorist activities against neighboring countries.
Ambassador Ahmad concluded by warning that failure to address the threat posed by terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan could have grave consequences for peace and security in the entire region.
