Syrian Kurds warn Iranian Kurds against alliance with US amid regional tensions

QAMISHLI: Kurdish residents in northeast Syria have cautioned their Iranian Kurdish counterparts against forming an alliance with the United States in efforts to confront the Iranian government, citing their own recent experiences as a warning.

According to Kurdish sources in Qamishli, Iranian Kurdish militias based in northern Iraq have recently engaged in consultations with the United States regarding potential attacks on security forces in western Iran. These discussions come at a time when both the United States and Israel have carried out air strikes targeting Iran.

However, Syrian Kurds have expressed concern that such an alliance could ultimately prove detrimental. Saad Ali, a 45-year-old resident of Qamishli, stated, “I hope that the Kurds of Iran will not ally themselves with America, because they will abandon them.” He further warned, “Tomorrow, if an agreement is made between them (the US) and the Iranians, they will eliminate you. Do not make our mistakes.”

Syrian Kurdish fighters have a history of cooperation with the United States, having aligned with Washington over a decade ago to combat the militant Islamic State group. Despite this partnership, recent developments have led to feelings of abandonment among Syrian Kurds, prompting them to advise their Iranian counterparts to reconsider any potential alliance with the US.

The warnings come amid heightened regional tensions and shifting alliances, as Kurdish groups across the region weigh their options in the face of ongoing conflicts and international interventions.
